Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation: Our TMS Treatment Update
We have providing Transcanial Stimulation in the Brainerd and Baxter area for about 3 months now and we continue to be impressed with the efficacy and tolerability we have seen. Most folks present with a fear that either the treatment itself will be uncomfortable or that they will see no benefit from it. Although we can’t make bold claims (the FDA gets uber irritated) I can say that our successes have impressed me.
With any “new” treatment (it has been around for over 20 years now) it takes a while for people to get comfortable with it - and I will admit the idea that we can effectively treat depression with magnets is pretty weird - but we are in this for the long haul and with continue to support this service. I am convinced that once the public realizes that you can effectively treat depression WITHOUT drugs TMS will be a first line agent.
What does the future hold? TMS is currently approved for treatment of OCD and depression and studies are promising for its use for panic, anxiety and smoking cessation.
I will keep you posted.
